Simple pleasures

Author: Laila Uljas

I've just turned 40 the other year, and to tell you the truth, I like being forty. I'm a mother to nine beautiful children (including one set of twins). Previously I have done product and concept development for coffee shops and bakeries. At the moment, I have been focusing on the wellbeing of our communities. I graduated from the University of Helsinki with a Master's in political science. The welfare of our society and community we live in is something I have always been concerned about ever since I was young. But life sometimes takes you into unplanned and exciting places. Soon we will be returning to our home city of 17 years, Kouvola, Finland after spending nine months on a dairy farm in northern Finland. It has been an experience of a lifetime. I have been telling the story of life on the dairy farm on my youtube channel Jenkkimutsi maalla interspersed with issues that affect our society. Most videos are in Finnish, but a few are in English. Welcome along.

In my Kitchen

Celia at Fig Jam and Lime Cordial hosts a series every month called “In My Kitchen”. I thought I would participate this month and give you a little peek into my kitchen. Since it is October, it really is the end of the berry season. Lingonberries are the last of the berries, bright red and […]

Yellows and Oranges

Autumn is definitely a glorious time with the abundance of fresh produce on hand. The berries, mushrooms and the harvest from our small garden has certainly kept us busy. I have taken quite a few photos and have recipes on hand, but my only challenge is that, just like you, I only have twenty-four hours […]

Fall, the zoo and scalloped potatoes

Nearly every year we visit the Korkeasaari Zoo in Helsinki. The zoo is on a little island right off the shore of downtown Helsinki. There is even a ferry that will take you there for a small fee or you can drive and park on a neighboring island and make the short walk along the […]

Queen’s Tart

The inspiration for this post came from a fellow blogger in Sweden and her tart that she made using blackberries. And my little two year-old Isabella and her love for berries was certainly an inspiration as well. My husband snapped these shots of her enjoying her berries at the cabin this summer. It’s a favorite […]

Tomato Season

We’ve had many beautiful mornings and fairly warm days giving our tomato plants in the backyard a little more time before Jack Frost arrives. The moist fog that rests right above the fields disappears quite quickly when the sun is out giving the photographer only a few minutes to capture the shot while getting kids […]

Seven is a lucky number

Children start first grade here when they are seven. And it might be even a little more exciting if you happen to have a birthday in the same month. Most people have returned from their summer vacations and there is the anticipation of the new school year, new friends, riding your bike to and from […]

Fiskars

When I think of travel, I automatically think of far away places, but sometimes there are unique places to visit close by. We had an opportunity to take a little mini get-away for just a night. Of course we had our little baby with. The kids had a trusted sitter and so with pleasant expectations […]

Colors and Flavors of Late Summer

School started last week which means that the midnight sun no longer gives off its soft light and regular bedtimes have been reintroduced into the rythym of life. I always look forward to summer, the light, and warmth but as school approaches I always look forward to the soft dusk of the August evenings. […]

A new Fazer concept: Nordic with a twist of Global

Yesterday was an exciting day. Fazer held a press conference at the newly remodeled Munkkivuori Fazer Cafe in Helsinki. This was in some ways my baby as well, since I was part of the team that worked to develop the new concept. We had been looking for new sophisticated flavors and trends while keeping in […]

A Princess Torte for a Prince

The day before the baptism I baked and filled the cake. One of our girls came in the kitchen and asked what I was making. I said that I was making a Princess Torte. “A Princess Torte for a boy?” was the next question. I had to explain that it was just the name of […]
